Bursary Opportunities: Sasol Mining Fence-line (Mainstream) Programme

Sasol Mainstream bursaries is a performance-based programme with a work-back / pay-back obligation. This is a comprehensive bursary offered to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate in selected Engineering, Science and Technology qualification.

The Sasol Mining Fence-line Bursary Programme aims to attract exceptional young talent to the organization. Bursaries awarded are for full-time studies for a bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) at an approved South African University and are offered to South African Citizens only.

Bursaries will exclusively be granted for studies within the following academic disciplines:

Engineering:  

  • Electronic Engineering (B.Eng.)
  • Electrical Engineering (B.Eng.)
  • Industrial Engineering (B.Eng.)
  • Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng.)
  • Mining Engineering (B.Eng.)

Science:  

  • Geology (B.Sc.) – Please be aware that obtaining an Honours degree is mandatory for pursuing this field of study.

Engineering Technology Degree:  

  • Mine Surveying (B.Eng. Tech.)
These bursary opportunities are limited to South African citizens (by birth only) from Sasol Mining Fenceline communities, who are / will be pursuing degree studies at a public South African University or University of Technology (for Mine Surveying only).
Eligible applicants are students in either their first or second year of studies in 2024.

 

Fields for Study

Applications may be submitted for degrees (no diplomas) in one of the following fields of study:

Undergraduate Studies (B.Eng. / B.Sc.) (Not a B.Eng. Tech)

  1. Electrical Engineering
  2. Electronic Engineering
  3. Geology
  4. Industrial Engineering
  5. Mechanical Engineering
  6. Mining Engineering

Undergraduate Studies (B. Eng. Tech.) – University of Technology

  1. Mine Surveying

 

Application Criteria – Minimum Criteria

Bursaries are available to individuals in either the matriculation phase or those who are in their first year of studies pursuing the relevant qualifications or degrees.

1.  B.Eng. and B.Sc.Eng & Geology

  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Mathematics (not Maths Literacy)
  • Level 6:  70 -79% for Physical Science
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

 

2.  B.Eng. Tech. (Mine Surveying) 

  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Mathematics (not Maths Literacy) and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for Physical Science and
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English First Additional language or
  • Level 5:  60 – 69% for English home language or
  • Level 4:  50 – 59% for English Second Additional language

 

The general application criteria for students are outlined as follows:

  • Applicants who wish to pursue 1st-year studies must submit their applications with either Grade 11 or Grade 12 results.
  • Applicants aiming for 2nd-year studies must submit their applications with Grade 12 results.

Application criteria for current university undergraduate students (Academic first year in 2023 applying for 2nd year in 2024)

  • If a student is already studying towards the degree course for which he/she is applying for a bursary, the student must be registered for the degree course over the minimum study period for the degree involved (i.e., 4 years for engineering degree) and/or able to still complete studies in that minimum period. NB. Students who are already on an extended study period or already added a year to the minimum study period (i.e., 5 years for an engineering degree) as well as individuals who are planning to register for an extended degree course, must not apply.
  • Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited and approved South African University. NB. Studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA) will not be considered/allowed.
  • No bursaries will be awarded for studies at a University of Technology, except for studies in Mine Surveying.

 

Notes for all applicants

  • Applicants must be South African citizens with a valid ID document/card.
  • Shortlisted applicants must be willing and able to avail themselves for online psychometric testing as part of the selection process. These assessments will take place before the interview phase.
  • A full academic record is required when students apply.
  • Proof of permanent home residence (municipality and district) will be required when students apply.
  • All bursaries awarded are subject to the condition that the candidate’s end of year results in Grade 12 (if currently in matric) or end of year results at university (if currently studying at university) do not differ substantially from the results presented during the application process. The minimum criteria will still be valid though.
  • Sasol reserves the right to withdraw the Sasol bursary offer if the candidate performs substantially weaker academically than the academic results submitted during the application process, if the student will apply or are registered for an extended degree course or due to failed subject are already on an extended study period or when a student intend to register/register for a so called dual/combined/hybrid degree course or a degree course not agreed upon or should the student not permanently reside and matriculated in one of the municipalities indicated below. NB. Students should be discouraged to apply for a bursary, well knowing that they plan to study in a different (although possibly related) degree course.

Bursary Applications for the 2024 Academic Year for Unemployed Learners

The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) for the Mining and Minerals Sector in terms of the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998.

The MQA would like to invite learners who are presently in grade 12 or already studying at a public university, university of technology or a TVET college to apply for a MQA bursary for the 2024 academic year of study.

A total of 1000 bursary opportunities will be available for the 2024 academic year.

The bursary will cover tuition fees and allowances for accommodation, books, and meals. 

NB: The bursary is ONLY available to South African citizens. 

The MQA bursary scheme focuses on funding the following qualifications at universities, universities of technology, and TVET Colleges as indicated below.

However, the MQA may allocate 20% of the total bursary allocations for the 2024 academic year for qualifications which are not listed below, which the MQA may deem as qualifications necessary for the mining and minerals sector.

  • Rigger Ropes Man

Preference will be given to the following aspects in the selection of candidates:

  • Historically Disadvantage Individuals (HDI) applicants.
  • Financially needy applicants with a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per annum. The household income will be verified by MQA, and misrepresentation of the household income will disqualify the application.
  • Female applicants.
  • Applicants living in rural communities.
  • Applicants who have applied to study at their local tertiary institutions.
  • Candidates with a strong academic record.

The application period will open from 01 September 2023 and close on 01 October 2023.

Late applications will not be considered.

To qualify for the bursary, the applicant must be unemployed at the time of the application and must remain unemployed for the duration of his/her studies.

2024 External Bursary Programme Nedbank

At Nedbank we believe in using our financial expertise to do good by helping bright young leaders to pursue their academic dreams.

The Nedbank External Bursary Programme (bursary) aims to fund academically deserving students who do not have the financial means to study fulltime towards a first undergraduate degree or diploma at a South African public university or university of technology. The aim of the bursary programme is to address South Africa's scarce-skills shortages, with a specific focus on green economy skills.

In short, green economy promotes sustaining and advancing economic, environmental and social well-being. Green-economy skills refer to those areas of study that focus on improving human well-being and social equity, while also significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. Green-economy skills include the reducing of carbon emissions and pollution, increasing energy and materials efficiency and enhancing our natural capital.

Criteria for selection

1. We will only consider applications from South African citizens.

2. You must have a proven financial need, as determined by household income.

3. You must have obtained the following minimum academic results:

3.1 An average of 65% in the year that you are applying for the bursary, ie in grade 12 or at university level.

3.2 An average of 65% for the required subjects aligned to the degree you plan to study at university.

4. We will not consider applicants who completed their grade 12 or senior certificate with Mathematics Literacy.

5. You must have obtained admission to a South African public university or university of technology for the undergraduate qualification you plan to study.

Supporting documents required for your application

1. A certified copy of your South African identity card/document.

2. Your most recent academic transcript, ie:

2.1 Grade 11 final results, as well as your mid-year results if you are currently in grade 12.

2.2 Grade 12 final results as well as your mid-year results if you are currently in your first year at university.

2.3 Your last academic year results as well as your current mid-year results if you are currently in your second or third year at university.

3. The financial checks affidavit must be signed by:

3.1 your parent(s) or guardian(s);

3.2 you, the bursary applicant.

The screening process

1. We will only consider bursary applications submitted online via the link we have provided.

2. Incomplete bursary applications will be rejected.

3. Bursary applications will be screened and shortlisted according to the qualifying criteria listed as mentioned above.

Required supporting documents for shortlisted applicants

Parents, legal guardians and all income-earning members of a shortlisted applicant's household must provide the following: 

1. Written consent that they understand that personal information will be requested and given to third parties who will assist the Nedbank Educational Trust with verifying income.

2. Completed income and expenditure statement for the applicant's combined household income.

3. Certified copies of the following documents in a single batch, within seven working days of the application:

3.1 Identity document(s).

3.2 Most recent payslip(s), letter(s) of employment, not older than three months, of each parent or guardian.

3.3 Proof of income, home loan account statement, and city/town council rates and taxes statement (not older than three months), if parents or guardians are informal traders or hawkers.

3.4 IRP5, IT3 and IT12 forms for the past two years, if parents or guardians are earning commission only.

3.5. An official pension slip or bank statement (not older than three months), if parents or guardians receive income in the form of pension/grant/maintenance/rent/interest from investments.

3.6. Past three months' bank statements.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo psychometric and other assessments and attend a virtual interview.

When the screening process is completed, the application forms and screening results will be presented to the Nedbank Educational Trust for review. Bursaries will be awarded at the sole discretion of the Trust.

The University KwaZulu-Natal Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund For Masters Study

The University KwaZulu-Natal has gratefully received a generous bequest via the terms of the last Will of Winifred Jane Turner, mother of the late “Rick” Turner who was so tragically assassinated during the apartheid era.  The University is pleased to establish a Bursary Fund in memory of the late Richard Turner.

Although “banned” for many years, his “oppositional stance” and his involvement with Trade Unions exerted a significance influence within the University community.  He taught a clear vision of Democracy decades before a universal franchise became a reality in 1994.

The Richard AD Turner Bursary Fund will provide for a postgraduate scholarship in the “Rick” Turner scholastic tradition of philosophy and political studies.  Successful recipients for this award would be postgraduates (Masters) with demonstrable student leadership credentials as well as some proven involvement in community work in which democratic endeavours are highlighted.  The award will support Master’s level research which focuses on issues of justice and freedom for all South Africans.  The successful “Rick” Turner scholar would be expected to contribute to student leadership while holding the award and his/her field of expertise must be inclined towards trade unionism.

Candidates must submit the following to the Financial Aid Advisor in their College.

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae (max 5 pages)
  • Academic records
  • At least one referee’s report commenting on your leadership/community involvement
  • Your Master’s thesis/dissertation proposal (max 3 pages)  
  • Or a motivation for your choice of your research area
