USM is a leading producer of high-quality VHP brown sugar, which is sold in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and to various cross-border regional markets.
Situated in the heart of Zululand, 25 kms from St Lucia, the surrounding area of Mtubatuba is a vibrant farming community. We support our local small scale can growers and the rest of our cane is grown on the Umfolozi Flats. We currently employ a total of 350 people, mainly form the local community.
USM is committed to sustainability and is awake to opportunities to expand its production of renewable electricity, bio-ethanol, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as market opportunities arise. Currently, USM generates renewable electricity which is exported onto the national electricity grid and sold to third-party customers.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- BSc or B-Tech degree in Electrical Engineering (heavy current) with an excellent academic record.
- Excellent potential and willingness to learn and grow in a challenging work environment.
- Experience in a Sugar Manufacturing environment as an Inserve /Graduate will be advantageous.
- Completed all subjects required to be accepted to write government certificate of competency.
- The Ability to study, write and pass the SMRI 10-week Course in Sugar Engineering.
- Ability to read and interpret technical reports, drawings, diagrams, and instructions.
- Methodical and analytical approach to fault finding and problem solving.
- Good interpersonal skills and a desire to fit into the USM culture.
- Good command of both spoken and written English.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Office and fluent with Excel.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
- Adhere to the health, safety and food safety standards and attend FSSC 22000 Training.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to lead and manage Electrical and Instruments teams.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to compile budget and control budget.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to identify, motivate, implement, and manage continuous improvement projects.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to plan and manage plant shutdowns.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills towards automation, digitization, factory data management and control systems.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to investigate plant deficiencies to identify and address the root cause of functional failures.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills for operational and maintenance electrical articulation network within USM property.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills on good customer & stakeholder relationships.
- Learn, develop, and demonstrate skills to manage and improve electrical utility costs, power export revenue and associated contracts.
