Our brilliant team of experienced maths teachers lead our live classes for grades 7 to 12 every evening, but they're in need of trusty companions to ensure classes run smoothly and engagement levels remain high. Responsibilities
- Maintaining a fun, upbeat dialogue with teacher and learners during the live class (kids are taking time out of their day to do this, and we need to make it worth their while).
- Monitor the online chat during live lessons, fire off quick responses, respond to learners' questions and troubleshoot tech issues if needed.
- Facilitating breakout groups where learners solve problems together.
- Answering questions and guiding learners to conceptual understanding.
- Participating in meetings and workshops to develop Watobe's pedagogical model and modalities for interaction.
- Growing with the company as we scale up to serve ever-greater number of users while maintaining a high quality of teaching.
Important stuff
- We teach in two blocks 16:45-19:00 Monday to Thursday. You'll need to be available either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday (more if you have capacity).
- The total time commitment is 6 to 10 hours a week, depending on your availability.
- Opportunities for more hours are available should you want them.
- This is an entirely remote role. We try to get the team together when possible
- We'll buy you a UPS inverter so we can keep the show on the road in spite of loadshedding
- You need your own laptop and a WiFi connection with at least 20Mbps download speed (test it at www.fast.com)
- You'll need a silent area where you're guaranteed to be undisturbed during live classes
- Compensation is R150 per hour
Requirements
Teaching experience
- Final year or newly qualified mathematics teacher (BEd or PGCE) (desired).
- A minimum of 1 year working experience teaching or tutoring mathematics in a school or online learning environment.
- Comfortable teaching either Grades 7-9 or Grades 10-12 CAPS-aligned Pure Maths
- Have a knack for facilitating interaction, discussion and problem solving within groups of 30+ learners
- Excellent spoken and written English.
Organisation and reliability
- High attention to detail - not just when it comes to maths problems but in lesson prep, communication, scheduling, and just being an all-round reliable team member
Presence
- You will have the chance to shine, crack some jokes and with your bright, dynamic personality bring energy to the lesson, encourage participation and drive engagement
- You must be good at reading the virtual classroom, have a magical way with teenagers
Tech stuff
- Undaunted by technical interfaces like video conferencing, screen sharing, multiple screens and tabs
